Kon'nichiwa! That's hello in Japanese! Today we had writer's workshop. Some of us went down to the Library to print photos for our new books! We are working on chapter books with real photographs or images. We like to sign up on the new chart for a writing conference with Miss Lloyd. Today we started using an arrow clip for our daily schedule so we can see what subject we are on. We used to turn them over, but now we can see what we completed that day. This helps us when it's time to sit down and write the blog.Today we went down to the music/art room to get our eyes checked. We learned about digraph blends during Fundations (for example: sh r ed). Today we learned how to count in Japanese. Josh read us a story during read aloud called Biscuit. Other students have signed up to read stories during read aloud on other days this week! This is really helping with our fluency. Today we had Library and we read a nonfiction book called Winnie. It had really cute pictures of a baby bear. This book taught us about the origin of Winnie the Pooh. There were a lot of new books in the Library today! This morning, we learned how to play first to four during math.

Bryson was excited to tell us that his shoes make a whale on the inside! We read a bucket filling book and we are talking about having a class bucket to fill. Today during math we worked on the bridge to ten.

Whoever reads the most books at home will get a prize from the treasure chest! Some of the items were glow sticks, bouncy balls, scented erasers, and more! We had a short day because of the snow-we got out at 1:00 which is two hours less than we are usually at school!

Today Bentley came back from Florida!! We got to hear a little bit about his trip to Disney!!! Bentley's favorite part was the Rock-n-Roll Roller Coaster!! When he was in Florida he ran into Mrs. MacQueen at Magic Kingdom! Today we got to look at a new map of Japan and it had volcanoes on it. We thought the people living there should move so they will stay safe. Today during music we played "You Can't Jump Josie." We sang "Floating down the river." Today we changed how we do reading-now we get to have reading centers! During math we used white boards to write all the ways to make ten, including ways that used THREE numbers! For example, 5+4+1=10. Today it was too cold so we did not get to go outside for either recess, but we had fun inside! During choice time a couple of students played a go fish alphabet game.

Science-States of Matter

We have been learning about the states of matter: liquids, solids, and gases. We have been exploring some pretty fun materials and deciding if they are liquids or solids. We discovered that sometimes it's not so easy! We learned that when solids and liquids combine they form colloids like toothpaste, shaving cream, and glook!
Bryson deciding if glook is a solid or a liquid.

Grant pretending to eat the shaving cream!

Griffin exploring glook!

Josh stirring the shaving cream.

Jack deciding if shaving cream is a solid or liquid...hmmm...

Kacie exploring sand!

Miss Meghan and Zayah having fun exploring shaving cream!

Miss Lloyd's mom, Jen came to help out with science!

Owen liked the feel of the glook!

Wow the glook can stay in a ball!

Silly sandy first graders!

Groundhog Day

Groundhog day in first grade was a lot of fun! We got to pet a real groundhog and made a craft to take home!

We did a little writing on Groundhog Day! Most of us wanted spring to come early-I guess that's not likely!

Thanks Oliver for sharing the groundhog with us!

They look like alligator mouths eating the bigger number! Today we had Library and we read a book called Meet the Dullards. We learned two new vowel teams oa as in boat and oe in toe during reader's workshop. We learned the saying "When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking."
