This week has been very busy and the fun is not over yet! Here's a peek at what we have been up to this week so far:

We have been learning about the doubles in math. You may have seen the doubles rap I sent home for your first grader to practice! Here is Trey thinking about how to beat Miss Lloyd at this doubles game...

First Grade ROCKS!

The first graders have been working hard on responsibility, being outstanding scholars, being cooperative, kind, and safe in order to earn ROCKS in our classroom ROCKS jar. I am excited to share with you that they have filled the jar for the first time this year! We voted as a class and decided to have pajama and stuffed animal day on Wednesday, November 21, 2018! Students are allowed to wear their pajamas and bring ONE stuffed animal from home-it must be small enough to fit in their backpack. Please make sure they are still dressed appropriately for the weather. We talked about no slippers as well as they are a safety issue. Also, a reminder that Wednesday students are dismissed at 1:00 pm.
Way to go First Graders!

Math update

In math we have been learning how to count on to add. Students have been working with dominoes, dots, and numbers to do this. We count on from the larger number to find the sum. For example 5+3=    we would solve by counting 6, 7, 8 to figure out the answer is 8! Here are first graders working on this new math concept! Just this week we have started measuring and comparing items in our classroom using cubes and even an ant trail!

Mrs. Winchester is our Title 1 math teacher and she joins us for math centers twice a week!

Here's our math journal. You can see how we've been counting on.

Week 6 ALREADY!

We are already on week six of first grade! Time flies when you're having fun! Week six included SO much learning.

During Guidance, students learned with Mrs. O'Hearn that it's okay to be different and we should celebrate our differences. Mrs. O'Hearn shared a story about how it's great to be different and then students wrote and illustrated something that makes them different.
"It's okay to have short hair."

"It's okay to be missing a bunch of teeth."

"It's okay to like mermaids."

Here the class was sharing their differences before they went to write them.

In math students worked on teen numbers. After just six weeks students can identify, write, and order teen numbers. They know that teen numbers are made up of a ten and some more and that they can show them with their math hands, cubes, and ten frames. This week students learned how to put them in order and we started talking about one more, one less. Students have been working hard during math centers. We started ST Math this week, which is an iPad math program we use K-6. Students have also been playing the math games tic-tac-teen and tens pyramid.

This was our math quiz-students did great!

This quiz gives you a better idea of what students should be able to do with teen numbers.

In our classroom we call reading the Daily 5 because we have five literacy choices: read to self, work on writing, read to someone, word work, and listen to reading. So far we have learned about and practiced read to self, work on writing, and read to someone (new this week!) Students worked so hard to build their reading stamina and this week we made it to 12 and half minutes! The students were so excited and proud, as they should be!
Eleanor and Autumn

Aubrey and Layla are adding a new word to their "My Writing Words" books. They are practicing using the strategy called tune into interesting words.

Connor and Mayanna reading their good fit books!

Princeton is holding his check mark so he can practice checking for understanding after Scotty finishes reading the page.

Brayden and Ronan taking turns reading a book about volcanoes!

This is our chart so that everyone knows what to do during read to someone.

And...tomorrow is the all school hike! I will try to get some good pictures to post on our blog in case you can't join us!

First Grade Nature Trip!

Today we went for a short hike with Samuel Morey first graders and Miss Maggie to Southworth Park. We had the chance to look for insects, play a game called "predator, prey" and do some texture rubbings with clay and crayons. It was so much fun! This picture shows our closing circle where students shared one rose and one thorn from the day-one positive and one negative. It was impressive to hear how positive students were about our trip-even though it was a little wet!
