Daily 5!

We have been learning all about the Daily 5 for reading! The five choices include: read to self, read to someone, word work, listen to reading, and work on writing. So far we have learned and been practicing read to self, read to someone, and word work. Take a look at us doing read to someone today:
It's helpful to point under our words as we read!

We like to get comfy when we read!

Really comfy!

We use a check mark to "Check for Understanding" after we read!

It's also important to look at our partner's book when he or she is reading.

We did a great job reading today!

Butterflies!

Today was a VERY exciting day in first grade! We found out when we arrived at school that one of our butterflies had hatched and was drying it's wings! That left us with two that were close to hatching. Right before math we saw that another one had hatched and we got to watch it dry and harden it's wings and fly away! Take a look!

Monarchs!

Today we started learning about the butterfly life cycle. We learned that butterflies actually start as eggs and then a caterpillar hatches from the egg. We haven't seen it yet but we learned that the next step is a chrysalis or pupa and, finally a butterfly! We have a whole jar of caterpillars in our classroom that are munching away on milkweeds! One has already started to make a chrysalis and several more are getting ready. We will be observing our caterpillars closely and waiting patiently for them hatch into monarch butterflies!

Learning about Martin Luther King Jr.

On Friday we talked about who Martin Luther King Jr. was. Students loved hearing about history and had several great questions. Their questions and comments were heartwarming and inspiring. If only we could all see the world through a six year old's eyes! Here we are watching a cartoon, Our Friend Martin and below you will find the first graders' dreams for the world; they certainly have it figured out.

"I have a dream that people stop putting trash in the ocean."

"I have a dream that bad guys turn into good guys."

"I have a dream that the good guys win."

"I have a dream that we would be nice to everyone in the whole entire world."

"I have a dream that people don’t throw trash anywhere but in the trash can."

"I have a dream that people will learn more about how to take care of our earth."

"I have a dream that everyone can be friends so we can all have friends."

"I have a dream that people won’t be mean to other people."
