TEAM BUILDING DAY!

What does it mean to be a team? That was what we were trying to figure out last Wednesday! We played games outside ALL day! The games were so fun! We had to cooperate and talk a lot about what a good team has to do.  We did a few activities inside, but mostly outside. It was a long, fun day exploring kindness, team work, patience, and taking turns.

Here were our activities...
Don't wake the dragon: We had to arrange ourselves in order from shortest to tallest in order to escape from the dragon (Miss Lloyd). We didn't want to wake the dragon so we had to do it without talking!

Blindfolded obstacle course: We led a friend through an obstacle course while they were blindfolded. We had to use only our words to give directions. It took a lot of patience, cooperation, and trust! We did a great job!
Eva leading Connor
Emily leading Isabel
Isabel leading Thomas

Kaylee leading Addison. And check out Miss Amy's crazy hair!!

Noella leading Emily

Elsa leading Noella

Braylynn leading Nathaniel

Hannah leading Elsa

Addison leading Braylynn

Zola leading Hannah

Alden leading Addison

Dawson leading Zola

Connor leading Alden

1-2-3-4!: This game is like rock, paper, scissors. We count to 4 quickly and on 4 we all put our hands out with any number of fingers from 0-4. As a team, we are trying to get 11 fingers total. It was fun and we did great!
11!!!

Some great teamwork!

So close!

1-2-3-4!

A great team!

Egg relay race: We used real eggs on the pavement and plastic spoons. The goal: get all your teammates through the relay first! The catch: if your egg fell you had to go all the way back and get a new one!

Zola lost her egg! It went FAR!

Circle of silence (with a gem): One person stands in the middle with their eyes closed and the rest of us pass a plastic box with a gem in it around the cirlce. The gem makes a lot of noise when it moves so we had to move it carefully. If the person in the middle hears the gem, they point to where they hear it! We tried to get it all the way around without getting caught!
Nathaniel is in the middle and Kaylee is carefully passing the box.

We also played a few tag games to practice patience, kindness, and team work! Blob tag was one of our favorites, but we got frustrated easily. We had to stop often and talk about how to work as a team.

We even had snack outside and talked about our morning. We shared something we had noticed about the morning, what worked, and what we could do better to be a team.

We read two books: What Are You So Grumpy About? by Tom Lightenheld
and One by Kathryn Otoshi.

We learned a lot on our team building day! Since this day we have been working on bringing all that we learned about being a kind team who works together into our classroom and all that we do!

Read to Someone!

In our first grade classroom we do the Daily 5 for reader's workshop. We have been practicing read to self where we read alone. Today, we started read to someone!!We sit EEKK when we read to someone which means we sit Elbow to Elbow, Knee to Knee. We make sure we read quietly, we stay in one spot, we read the WHOLE time, and we get started right away! Check out how great we did by looking at our pictures below:

Tunbridge Fair 2017

We went to the Tunbridge Fair on Thursday, September 14, 2017! We saw awesome animals, exhibits, and antiques! We loved the violin maker, the baby pigs and chicks, and the yummy maple cotton candy! We were so lucky because we had several wonderful parent volunteers! Thanks for joining us everyone!! If you have pictures from your group, please post them in the comments!
This was Miss Lloyd and Miss Amy's group: Isabel, Kaylee, and Zola. We were posing in front of this HUGE pumpkin! WOW!

Today in REP we got to see the teachers do the shadow dance. It's a fun dance where you need to follow the leader. Today in math we learned about 3D shapes and Miss Lloyd showed us how to draw them. In our journal, we had to draw them ourselves. We had to make sure to include dotted lines to show that it was 3D. Today during snack Mrs. Griffin showed us all how to open her Japan treasures box! We are reading a chapter book called Gooseberry Park by Cynthia Rylant. We are really liking it so far, especially the characters Kona and Murray!

Today we went on a field trip! We went on an insect safari to Patterson. One group went down to the creek and found a big long water strider. One group found a few different animals. We found water bugs and caddisflies. We also found some small littler bugs we had to look through a magnifying glass to see them! We found quite a few ticks as well! Someone caught two water striders at once! We had so much fun on our field trip! Thanks Maggie!

Today during science we made ladybugs! The parts included: a head, wings, body, spots, eyes, antennae. On the inside of the ladybug we wrote and illustrated the life cycle of a ladybug. We had Library today and we read about how different animals use different body parts. It was called What do you do with a Tail Like This? We had indoor recess and we did a great job keeping our voices down-we earned TWO rocks! During Fundations, we started building words with two blends! One at the end and one at the beginning. We are sorry we haven't been blogging for a while-we will try to be better!

We had Library today! We read a really run book called The Robbery at the Diamond Dog Diner which is about dogs that were robbers. They robbed diamonds and in the end they got caught! During writer's workshop we got to have two cookies. One soft cookie and one hard cookie. We taste tasted and then decided which we liked better because we are writing about opinions. During reader's workshop we learned to make inferences. An inference is when you read between the lines! We had inside recess today because it was raining. Today was the first day of the dental van!

Today during math we got to use iPads to play ST math. Today in P.E. we played Jellyfish tag and we played floor hockey. During Guidance we got to hear a story about a boy who wanted a doll. People picked on him and called him a sissy. We talked about how hurting others feelings is not okay and we should always think about our classroom rule, be kind (the golden rule). We completed our GoNoodle level. Our champion McPufferson was maxed out and we got to choose a new one named Weevil MaBeevil. During writer's workshop we wrote about our favorite place to be!
